The theme of this year’s event was based around the 2012 – 2014 PABIAC Strategy ‘Being the difference Together’, and we were delighted that David Gartside, Board Member, Health and Safety Executive, delivered the ‘Key Note’ Speech to the paper industry and officially launched the new strategy at this event.

In addition we had a number of excellent speakers including:

  • Jennifer Deeney
‘It will Never Happen to Me’ - At a time when health and safety is in the news for all the wrong reasons, this story was a stark reminder of why it is of paramount importance in our industry. There was no script or slides, just Jennifer talking about why safety is important, and the impact that an accident can have on your family and friends.

  • Nancy Hamilton, Occupational Health Specialist Inspector, HSE
Occupational Health: The Next Phase - One of the challenges that the industry is facing is getting to grips with work related health issues. Nancy Hamilton, explained what companies can and should be doing in occupational health provision, and once these are established, the many benefits that this will bring.

  • Tony Horsfall, SHEQ Director, Harsco Infrastructure
The Cost of Accidents: Stop and Think, before
    you ACT -
‘The Cost of Accidents’ - This specially constructed film by Harsco Infrastructure highlighted that the safety of ourselves and of others ultimately depends on the decisions that we make as individuals. Tony Horsfall explained why the company took the decision to make the film, and the change that has come about following its release.

  • Martin Woodhall, Safety Director, Lattitude
All for One: The Meerkat Way - In his presentation, Martin offered delegates his “Furry Guide to Safe Working”. We recognise that team safety or more formally “the interdependent culture” is critical to achieve safety excellence and one of the very best exponents are Meerkats, hence the title of his presentation, which was fun and interactive and featured a superb film on the interdependent culture.

  • Kevin Bridges, Partner, Pinsent Masons LLP
Directors and Senior Managers: Leading from
    the Top -
In February 2011, Cotswold Geotech became the first company to be convicted under the Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act 2007. Pinsent Masons LLP acted as the defence lawyers in the case and Kevin Bridges gave a fascinating insight into the case and the implications for future breaches of Health and Safety law.

  • Justin Hughes, Managing Director, Mission Excellence
Working Together: Mission Excellence - Justin is a former Tornado F3 fighter pilot, and was selected to join the famous Red Arrows Team, where he performed over 250 displays worldwide. Using the principles of Plan - Brief - Execute - Debrief, and based on a fighter pilot's mission cycle, Justin described the fundamentals of team and organisational performance, and the principles that can be applied to deliver results in almost every organisation.
